In the latest chapter of Edo State’s political drama, the Federal High Court in Abuja has given its stamp of approval to Asue Ighodalo as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the September 21 Governorship Election. The ruling, handed down by Justice James Omotosho, dismissed a suit led by the reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, who was on a quest to derail Ighodalo’s candidacy.

Matthew Iduoriyemkewen, the Director General of the PDP Edo State Campaign Organisation, didn’t waste a moment basking in what he perceives as a victory. Speaking to Channels Television in Benin City, he praised the court’s decision, claiming it was a predictable outcome designed to cut through the noise and distractions. According to him, the PDP has been laser-focused on their campaign, shrugging off internal squabbles and legal tussles.

Iduoriyemkewen urged the disgruntled party members to shelve their personal ambitions for the greater good of the PDP, emphasizing that only one candidate can fly the party’s flag in the governorship race. He made it clear that the party’s unity and strength are paramount, subtly reminding everyone of the importance of falling in line.

Justice Omotosho’s ruling dismissed Shaibu’s suit, which aimed to invalidate Ighodalo’s nomination based on allegations of forgery of his voter’s card.

The judge ruled that the case was statute-barred, falling outside the 14-day window allowed for pre-election disputes under Section 285(9) of the Constitution. The court also found that Shaibu, having not participated in the primary, lacked the standing to challenge its outcome.

So, while the PDP celebrates this court victory as a sign of their unyielding focus and cohesion, one must wonder if this is merely a temporary lull in the storm of Edo politics. With internal rifts still simmering beneath the surface, can the PDP truly claim to be united?
