The Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has thrown his weight solidly behind the United States visa ban on reported election riggers in Nigeria.
According to Nigerian Newspaper, The PUNCH, the US had imposed visa restrictions on some Nigerians who had been accused of undermining democracy. The Embassy had revealed that its latest move was part of the action to advance democracy and tackle corruption in Nigeria.
Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, January 25 saying that the sanctioned individuals, whose names he did not reveal, would be ineligible for the US visa.
The high-ranking diplomat had also explained that some family members of those barred from the US may be subjected to the same visa restrictions.
However, Blinken clarified that the visa restriction was not targeted at the Nigerian people or their government.
But Atiku, in a reaction to the ban via his Twitter handle had encouraged other “established democracies” to join the United State in placing a visa ban on election riggers in Nigeria.
