The internal strife within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken another turn as the South-South Zonal Executive Committee (ZEC) suspended its Zonal Secretary, Felix Omemu, for one month over alleged misconduct and unauthorized media statements.
Omemu had previously questioned the legitimacy of a ZEC meeting held in Benin, Edo State, arguing that the gathering convened by South-South Vice Chairman Dan Orbih was unconstitutional as it lacked approval from the Zonal Working Committee.
Suspension and Disciplinary Measures
During the ZEC meeting in Benin, Martin Amaewhule, the factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, moved the motion for Omemu’s suspension. The motion was seconded by Hon. Godwin Offiono, who represents the Ogoja/Yala constituency in the House of Representatives.
Amaewhule justified the decision, stating; “Chief Felix Omemu has been suspended, and a disciplinary committee has been set up to investigate him. His actions were illegal and aimed at causing disunity while discouraging members from attending the South-South ZEC meeting in Benin.”
With Omemu’s suspended, George Turnah, the PDP Zonal Legal Adviser, was appointed as Acting Zonal Secretary.
Orbih Praises Decision, Calls for Party Discipline
Omemu’s suspension has been praised by the South-South PDP Vice Chairman Dan Orbih, framing it as a necessary step to restore order and unity within the party.
“This move is aimed at curbing the excesses of leaders and members who seek to disrupt party harmony,” Orbih stated.
The meeting in Benin saw the participation of the Zonal Chairman, Senators, and House of Representatives members from five South-South states with Akwa Ibom State being the notable absentee.
What This Means for the PDP
Omemu’s suspension reflects the deepening factional struggles within the PDP, particularly in the South-South region, a traditional stronghold of the party. As internal power struggles persist, the coming weeks will reveal whether this move strengthens party discipline or further exposes the cracks within its leadership.
