Adamawa State Pensioners on the state government payroll have requested for a review of their 4,000 Naira monthly pension.
Mohammed Sali, the chairman of the pensioners association had stated over the weekend that disbursing 4,000 Naira monthly was too unrealistic to continue.
Sali had said:
“Our major food here in the state is maize. A bag of maize today goes for about 40,000 Naira. What then can a pensioner eat.”
“Majority of pensioners survive on drugs. It is what comes with old age. The youngest among us is aged 60.
This is for everyone to know that after physically challenged people, pensioners come next as they also need special care.”
Sali, who became the Adamawa Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP, chairman in 2022, could not pinpoint when the 4,000 Naira monthly pension began in the state, estimating that it must have started 10 years ago.
“The pension is supposed to be assessed every five years. But when the minimum wage for serving civil servants got reviewed, pension disbursement was not looked into.”
Finally, Sali had finished with an entreaty to the state governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, to intervene on the matter.
