Period Breakouts: Ways To Reduce Acne Breakouts During Your Period

Period breakouts, when combined with menstruation, must be one of the most bothersome things to deal with. During the menstrual cycle, hormone levels in the body change, particularly estrogen and progesterone, resulting in breakouts. These hormones influence the secretion of sebum, the skin’s oil. This secretion gets worse when androgen levels, such as testosterone, fluctuate, blocking skin pores and causing acne.

Because of the series of hormonal changes, this time of the month can be sensitive. It is impossible to stop the fluctuating hormones that cause period breakouts because they are natural and necessary aspects of the reproduction process. However, you can take a few steps to help manage these breakouts during the menstrual cycle.

Skincare Routine Adjustments

You’ve certainly heard it before, but everyone’s skin type differs. You may have already had a skincare routine in place before your period arrived and you began breaking out; the best thing to do is stick with your routine rather than someone else’s that seems to work for them.

In this scenario, it’s all about narrowing down the products you already use and developing a more simple but effective skincare routine to manage your breakouts. If you have no idea what to do or what not to do, a skincare specialist can assist you. Let’s have a look at some basic skincare steps:

Cleansing: Making sure your face is clean is a no-brainer. This is something you can do twice a day to help get rid of the extra oil that has built up on your skin over the day. There are various ways to cleanse your skin, but it’s important to use caution so as not to strip all of the essential oils from your skin.

Exfoliation: Exfoliating your skin at least twice a week removes dead skin cells and brightens the complexion, resulting in a smoother skin texture. Also, use a product that does not irritate the skin during or after exfoliation, such as products containing salicylic acid or AHAs.

Moisturizing: Some people feel that acne-prone skin does not require a moisturizer. But this is not true. Keeping your skin hydrated helps to balance oil production and prevents it from becoming excessive.

Lifestyle Changes

Managing period breakouts involves more than just using the appropriate skincare products. It also includes lifestyle habits that help your skin maintain its natural balance and reduce the recurrence of breakouts. Let’s look at some lifestyle changes:

Diet: What you put into your body, particularly during this delicate time of the month, could impact the health of your skin. We are talking about dairy and sugary foods, which might cause breakouts. It is advisable that you consume foods rich in a variety of nutrients and antioxidants to improve your skin’s complexion.

Stress management: I’ve noticed a few social media posts claiming that minding your business makes your skin glow. That sentence is true, whether it’s a joke or not. The mind and body are inextricably linked, so stressing over things that aren’t actually important or aren’t your problem raises your stress levels. High stress levels can cause hormonal fluctuations, resulting in increased oil release and breakouts.

Hygiene: Proper cleanliness can help prevent outbreaks. Habits such as regular face washing, hand washing before touching your face, changing pillowcases on a regular basis, washing makeup brushes on a regular basis, and avoiding direct contact between the phone screen and your face, keeps debris from different surfaces from clogging your pores.

Spot treatment: Although it can be quite tempting to pick at pimples, doing so will increase facial inflammation and create skin scars. It is best for you to use treatments with ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide at times like this. These ingredients—benzoyl peroxide in particular—have a drying effect on the skin that can reduce acne-causing bacteria and lessen irritation or inflammation.

Conclusion

During the menstrual cycle, hormone levels in the body change, particularly estrogen and progesterone, resulting in breakouts. These hormones influence the secretion of sebum, the skin’s oil. This secretion gets worse when androgen levels, such as testosterone, fluctuate, blocking skin pores and causing acne.

To avoid breakouts during your period, take care of your skin and make some simple lifestyle changes, such as eating a well-balanced diet, regulating your stress levels, practicing proper cleanliness, and using spot treatment.
