Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has come out swinging against what he calls a deliberate distortion of his recent TV interview. According to Obi, certain individuals, have resorted to spinning his words, misrepresenting his position in the name of propaganda.
Over the weekend, Obi took to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, adamantly denying any claims that he’s angling for the vice-presidency in the 2027 elections. Despite the rumors circulating, Obi made it clear that he’s fully committed to the Labour Party and has no intention of jumping into a VP race. And for anyone out there looking to partner up? Well, Obi has a message.
Obi isn’t desperate for power. In fact, he’s more focused on dragging Nigeria out of the depths of poverty, insecurity, and hunger than on chasing political office. As he puts it, his real concern is Nigeria’s development, not the next election cycle. In his words: “I do not want to be one of those preoccupied with 2027 while Nigerians are suffering.” Ouch! was that a jab at some other political figures who can’t stop planning for 2027, even as the country crumbles?
Obi went further, making it crystal clear that his vision is all about lifting Nigeria. He’s ready to work with anyone who shares that dream, but he’s got no time for opportunists whose main aim is state capture. For him, it’s about solving real issues, like getting millions of out-of-school children back into classrooms and lifting people out of poverty.

“I explicitly stated my openness to working with others,” Obi said, “but only if their intentions are about advancing Nigeria, not just winning an election.”
And let’s not forget Obi’s sharp response to the misinterpretation of his interview. Apparently, some political operatives think it’s wise to misquote him, suggesting that he’s ready to settle for a VP role in 2027. Well, Obi set the record straight: “For the avoidance of doubt, I never stated at any time that I would be vice president to anyone. My commitment to Nigeria remains steadfast.”
In true Obi fashion, he even added that he’s perfectly happy contributing to Nigeria’s progress without holding any political office. Because let’s face it, his influence isn’t tied to a title.
So, if you’re wondering whether Obi is already thinking about the next election, think again. His focus is squarely on fixing the country now. Meanwhile, others might want to start explaining how they plan to solve the real issues, hunger, insecurity, education—before dreaming of 2027.
