Pochettino Criticizes VAR as Chelsea Denied Late Winner in Aston Villa Draw

Mauricio Pochettino launched a scathing attack on VAR, claiming it has tarnished the Premier League’s integrity, after Chelsea were denied a late goal in their pulsating 2-2 draw against Aston Villa on Saturday. The dramatic encounter at Villa Park saw Chelsea fight back from a two-goal deficit, only to have their potential winner controversially disallowed in stoppage time.

Trailing to an early own goal by Marc Cucurella and a strike from Morgan Rogers, Chelsea displayed resilience to claw their way back into the match, with goals from Noni Madueke and Conor Gallagher leveling the scores. However, their late surge was marred by VAR’s intervention, as Robin Olsen’s own goal, deflected from Axel Disasi’s effort, was ruled out due to a perceived foul by Benoit Badiashile.

An incensed Pochettino lambasted the decision, denouncing the impact of VAR on English football and questioning the consistency of officiating. He argued that the disallowed goal not only robbed Chelsea of a deserved victory but also undermined the spectacle and essence of the Premier League.

The draw dealt a blow to Aston Villa’s aspirations of securing a top-four finish, with Tottenham Hotspur closing the gap in the race for Champions League qualification. Despite remaining favorites to clinch the coveted berth, Villa manager Unai Emery acknowledged the challenge posed by Chelsea’s resilience and emphasized the importance of striving for more positive results in the remaining fixtures.

Meanwhile, amid scrutiny over his leadership, Pochettino reportedly retains the support of Chelsea’s squad, despite enduring a turbulent campaign. The spirited display against Villa exemplified the team’s refusal to capitulate, showcasing their determination to salvage pride and compete at the highest level.

As the Premier League season nears its climax, controversies surrounding VAR continue to fuel debate, with Pochettino’s remarks serving as a poignant reminder of the contentious role technology plays in shaping the outcome of matches.
