Law enforcement authorities resorted to using water cannons to scatter climate activists who had staged a protest on a Dutch highway, demanding an end to government subsidies for the fossil fuel sector.
Despite warnings from authorities against obstructing the crucial traffic artery leading into The Hague, thousands of demonstrators marched along the A12 highway. The protest was organized by Extinction Rebellion, and its participants vowed to continue their demonstrations until the Dutch government ceases using public funds to support the oil and gas industry.
Chanting slogans like “The seas are rising, and so are we,” the diverse crowd, which included individuals of all ages, conveyed their strong stance on climate action.
