A major manhunt is underway in the small rural town of Porepunkah, in Australia’s state of Victoria, following a deadly ambush that left two police officers dead and one injured. The suspect, described by police as “heavily armed,” is believed to have fled into the bush alone after the shooting. Hundreds of law enforcement personnel have been deployed to the area in what authorities have called an “active incident” to find the suspect and his family, who are still missing.

Police Ambush and Manhunt in Porepunkah

The tragic incident began on Tuesday morning when 10 officers attended a property in Porepunkah, a town of about 1,000 people in the Australian Alps, to serve an arrest warrant for historical sex offenses. Police say the officers were ambushed by the suspect and that a 59-year-old detective and a 35-year-old senior constable were “murdered in cold blood.”

A third officer was seriously injured and had to be airlifted to a hospital. Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush confirmed that all available resources were being used in the manhunt for the “dangerous” suspect and urged locals to stay indoors. He also appealed to the gunman to turn himself in.

The Suspect: Sovereign Citizen Ideology and Past Incidents

Australian media has identified the suspect as Dezi Freeman, a self-proclaimed “sovereign citizen.” According to the Australian Federal Police (AFP), “SovCits” are individuals who falsely believe they are not subject to Australian laws and government authority.

While the movement has been present for decades, its resurgence has been fueled by growing distrust in authorities, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. The AFP has warned that the movement has “an underlying capacity to inspire violence.” This attack has drawn comparisons to a similar ambush in 2022 in Queensland, where two police officers were killed at a rural property. Gun crime is relatively rare in Australia due to some of the world’s strictest gun regulations, making this incident particularly shocking.

Community and National Response to the Tragedy

The tragic deaths of the two officers have deeply impacted the local community. The Mayor of Alpine Shire, Sarah Nicholas, expressed her sorrow in a statement, saying, “Today has been a day of deep sorrow and shock for our community… We are grieving together.” Residents like Emily White told the BBC that such an event is a rare occurrence in their small, close-knit community.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan have both praised the officers for their bravery and expressed their condolences to the families. The extensive manhunt in Victoria continues, with hundreds of personnel deployed to search for the heavily armed suspect and bring him to justice.
