In a development that adds to the ongoing controversy surrounding the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele, who remains in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), President Bola Tinubu has nominated Olayemi Cardoso as the new Governor of the Central Bank.
This announcement was made through a statement by presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale. According to the statement, President Tinubu has given his approval for Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso to take on the role of CBN Governor for an initial term of five years, pending confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.
In addition to the nomination of Cardoso, President Tinubu has appointed four deputy governors for the central bank. This decision aligns with Section 8 (1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, which grants the President the authority to appoint the Governor and four Deputy Governors for the CBN, subject to Senate confirmation.
These appointments come in the wake of President Tinubu’s earlier designation of Folashodun Shonubi as the Acting Governor of the CBN following Godwin Emefiele’s suspension from the position. Shonubi, who formerly served as the Deputy Governor in charge of the operations directorate, assumed this role amid ongoing investigations within the CBN and planned reforms in the financial sector.
The circumstances surrounding Emefiele’s suspension and the subsequent developments underscore the power dynamics at play in Nigeria’s political landscape. It appears to be a power struggle, with Emefiele possibly facing repercussions for challenging influential figures in Nigerian politics. The situation raises questions about the adherence to the rule of law in Nigeria, and it serves as a cautionary tale about the potential consequences of challenging the powerful elite in the country.
