President Vladimir Putin expressed Russia’s readiness to engage in discussions with Ukraine, the United States, and Europe regarding Ukraine’s future. Although, he emphasized Moscow’s commitment to safeguarding its national interests.
Despite deploying troops to Ukraine in 2022, Putin has consistently stated his willingness to pursue peace, with Western officials speculating that a genuine effort may come after the U.S. presidential election in November.
During a meeting of the defense leadership in Moscow, Putin remarked, “In Ukraine, those who are aggressive towards Russia, and in Europe and in the United States – do they want to negotiate? Let them. But we will do it based on our national interests.”
He said that Russia, while not seeking conflict with Europe, would steadfastly protect what it considers its own.
As of the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia holds control over approximately 17.5% of the territory internationally recognized as part of Ukraine.
The annexation of Crimea in 2014 and Russia’s claim last year that four additional regions in Ukraine are part of Russia have heightened tensions. Kyiv remains resolute, stating it will not rest until every last Russian soldier is expelled from Ukraine.
