Russian President Vladimir Putin has finally formalized a significant defense agreement with North Korea supporting reports that Pyongyang has sent thousands of troops to assist Russia in its conflict with Ukraine. According to reports, Putin initially struck a mutual defense deal with North Korea during a visit in June, but it required approval by Russia’s parliament and his official signature to take effect. On Saturday evening, The Kremlin published the finalized treaty on its website.

The agreement between both countries points to the deepening security ties between Russia and North Korea, two former Cold War allies. Since the war in Ukraine, North Korea has been one of the most vocal supporters of Russia’s military campaign. Security relations between Russia and North Korea is now further strengthened by this pact which obligates each country to provide military assistance to the other “without delay” in cases of attack. This alliance also reinforces their commitment to counter Western sanctions, and establishes joint efforts to align their stances at the United Nations.

Why This Matters

The Russia-North Korea defense pact signals a strategic shift, strengthening alliances between nations often at odds with Western interests. North Korea’s troop involvement in Ukraine, if accurate, could further intensify global tensions, complicate diplomatic efforts, and heighten the stakes of the Ukraine conflict. This alignment could also challenge Western-led sanctions and reshape alliances within the UN.

Bottom Line

The Russia-North Korea pact is a notable escalation in international military alliances, emphasizing both nations’ defiance of Western influence and support for each other’s security objectives. The agreement and reported North Korean troop presence in Ukraine may bring more volatility to the region and global diplomatic landscape.
