Paris Saint-Germain clinched their 13th Ligue 1 title — their fourth in a row — by beating Angers, 1-0, on Saturday, further strengthening their grip on French football. The win sealed the title with six games to go, capping an incredible season under Luis Enrique.
PSG have yet to lose in 28 matches and have 23 victories and five draws. The victory also represented a personal landmark for club skipper Marquinhos, who became the first player in Ligue 1 history to win 10 league titles. “It’s crazy. I’m really happy. It’s really a challenge to stay at a top club for this long,” he said.
This season, PSG have undergone an identity shift, one away from a reliance on superstars after the departures of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. Instead, Enrique has created a compact, youthful unit. Ousmane Dembele has flourished, notching 32 goals and seven assists in all competitions. The likes of Vitinha, Bradley Barcola and Desire Doue have also shone.
With the league title won, PSG will now focus on a possible historic treble. They meet Aston Villa in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and will contest Reims in the Coupe de France final on May 24. The season’s biggest tests are still to come.
