Recent developments indicate a growing commitment from both state and federal governments towards the agricultural sector, with efforts to engage citizens in agricultural development.
At the federal level, various policies have been implemented to drive different aspects of the agricultural sector and boost production.
In Bayelsa State, the Civil Service Commission has taken a significant step by approving a two-day weekly farming period for workers. This decision reduces the number of workdays to three, with the remaining two days designated for farming activities to enhance food security in the state.
The circular announcing this decision was signed by the Bayelsa State Head of Service, Biobelemoye Charles-Onyeama. However, it applies only to civil servants from Grade level 14 and below, excluding teachers, medical personnel, and other essential service staff.
The initiative is scheduled to commence on April 29, 2024, and will be implemented for a period of six months.
This move demonstrates a proactive approach towards agricultural development and food self-sufficiency in the state.
