Russia Warns of World War III Risks

Over Western Support for Ukrainian Strikes on Russian Soil

Russia issued a stern warning to the West on Tuesday, cautioning against the potential escalation of the Ukraine conflict by allowing Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory with Western missiles. Russian officials emphasized that such actions could provoke a global conflict, stating that World War Three would not be confined to Europe.

Background: Ukraine’s Attack on Kursk

On August 6, 2024, Ukraine launched an attack on Russia’s western Kursk region, marking the largest foreign assault on Russian soil since World War Two. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy responded to Kremlin threats of retaliation by dismissing them as mere bluffs. Zelenskiy pointed out that Western weapons were used in the Kursk attack, yet the Kremlin had not acted on its threats.

Russia has accused Ukraine of utilizing Western military equipment, including British tanks and U.S. rocket systems, in the Kursk attack. Kyiv confirmed the use of U.S. HIMARS missiles to target bridges in the region.

Ukraine’s Appeal for More Western Weapons

Despite the Kremlin’s warnings, Zelenskiy has continued to press Ukraine’s allies for permission to use more Western weapons against Russian military targets. He urged Western leaders to be more decisive in their support for Kyiv. Washington, however, claimed it was unaware of the Ukrainian attack on Kursk—a statement Russia rejected as false, asserting that U.S. involvement was “an obvious fact.”

U.S. and British Intelligence Support

According to a report by The New York Times, the United States and Britain provided Ukraine with satellite imagery and other intelligence related to the Kursk region following the attack. This intelligence reportedly aimed to assist Ukraine in tracking Russian reinforcements more effectively.

Sergei Lavrov’s Response

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who has held his position for over two decades, accused the West of deliberately seeking to escalate the conflict in Ukraine. He warned that considering Ukrainian requests to relax restrictions on the use of foreign-supplied weapons was akin to “asking for trouble.”

Lavrov reiterated Russian President Vladimir Putin’s warnings about the risk of a broader war involving the world’s largest nuclear powers, although he maintained that Russia does not desire a conflict with the U.S.-led NATO alliance.

Russia’s Nuclear Doctrine and Global Risks

Lavrov emphasized the dangers of the current situation, comparing the West’s actions to children playing with matches. He noted that while Americans often associate the concept of World War Three with a conflict confined to Europe, the reality could be far more devastating.

In light of the escalating tensions, Lavrov mentioned that Russia is “clarifying” its nuclear doctrine. Russia’s 2020 nuclear doctrine outlines the scenarios in which the president might consider using nuclear weapons, including in response to an attack using weapons of mass destruction or conventional weapons that threaten the very existence of the state.
