Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, the 14th Emir of Kano, has convened with the coup leaders in the Republic of Niger.
The ex-governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, had met the military leadership after the junta cancelled a meeting with African Union (AU) and Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) representatives. A meeting with a top US diplomat was cancelled as well.
An emissary selected by the West African bloc, ECOWAS, could not negotiate peace with the military rulers as they (the junta) turned down a meeting.
However, on Wednesday, August 9, video clips of Sanusi, whose Tijjaniya sect has a large following in Niger, began circulating in the news.
Sanusi is at present, the Khalifa of the sect in Nigeria.
The respected Nigerian economist had met with the Junta leaders in the company of the Sultan of Damagaran.
Note that the Damagaran is the third biggest city in Niger Republuc.
Anonymous sources have hinted that the Emir was there to broker and make way for negotiation with the Niger junta.
This meeting comes a day before the proposed gathering of ECOWAS leaders in FCT, Abuja.
