The governor of Lagos state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has distributed N427.7 million to the 4,277 members of the Batch B Stream 1 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployed in the state.

He announced the donation at the end of orientation camp earlier today, Tuesday, July 16. The governor also contributed N100 million to the NYSC and its support staff, promising to sanction N5 billion for the construction of a permanent orientation camp.

Additionally, following their service year, Governor Sanwo-Olu guaranteed 100 corps members automatic employment into the civil service. He warned the corps members to live up to the values of self-control, tenacity, and cooperation that they were taught during the three-week orientation course.

What they’re saying

He stated, “Over the last three weeks, you have been immersed in a transformative experience. You’ve learned to adapt to new situations, network with fellow citizens from various backgrounds, and accept the obstacles that come with communal living. This experience has not only prepared you for the challenges ahead, but it has also established in you a strong sense of solidarity that crosses ethnic, cultural, and geographical lines.

“When you leave this orientation camp and return to your various primary assignments, you must recognise the importance of this programme in fostering national unity.” This orientation camp was a miniature reflection of Lagos State, a melting pot of cultures, languages, and traditions, and you witnessed firsthand the power of variety.

“I am convinced that you will carry this knowledge with you as you contribute to the development of Lagos State and Nigeria in general. “I want you to actively participate in local communities, address issues, and contribute to worthwhile projects. As you enter the field, I encourage you to embody the qualities of discipline, perseverance, and collaboration that you have learned during your time in the camp

“As you leave this camp, remember that the path ahead is full of opportunities, and you have been equipped with new skills, new perspectives, and the drive to make a positive difference. The experiences you’ve received over the last three weeks have equipped you to face the difficulties and opportunities that lie ahead.”

Final Thought

Guaranteeing automatic employment for 100 corps members into the civil service is a notable move, providing job security and encouraging more active participation in the program. This initiative not only supports the professional growth of young Nigerians but also strengthens the workforce in Lagos State.
