The House of Senate has taken action against Senator Abdul Ningi, suspending him for three months following his claim that the 2024 Budget was padded by N3.7 trillion.

Ningi, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Population representing Bauchi Central, had raised concerns in an interview with BBC that the 2024 budget in operation was different from the one approved by the house.

When calls for an investigation into the allegation were made, some northern senators distanced themselves from Ningi, stating that he did not speak on their behalf.

Despite this, The Bauchi Senator did not let go of his stance, insisting that N3.7 trillion remained unaccounted for in the 2024 budget.

During Tuesday’s plenary session, Senator Olamilekan Adeola (APC, Ogun West), Chair of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, brought forth a motion emphasizing the need to address Ningi’s allegations.

Subsequently, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim proposed an amendment to suspend Ningi for 12 months.

However, Senator Chris Ekpeyong opposed this amendment, suggesting a reduction of the suspension to six months, which was seconded.

Senator Garba Maidoki further amended the motion, advocating for a three-month suspension for Ningi.

After a voice vote on the amended motion, Akpabio announced Ningi’s three-month suspension from the Senate. Ningi was then escorted out of the Senate floor by a Sergeant-at-arms.

Following the ruling, public opinion has surged, with many applauding Senator Ningi for his courage, deeming him a genuine advocate for public interest.

They criticize the Senate for attempting to silence him, viewing him as a symbol of bravery in challenging authority.

Furthermore, public sentiment suggests a prevailing belief that the Senate harbors systemic corruption, with dissenters often becoming scapegoats.

Concerns have been raised regarding Senator Jimoh Ibrahim’s warning to Senator Sumaila Kawu from Kano South, NNPP.

In one perspective, the 10th Assembly is characterized as a group of individuals primarily concerned with self-interest, leading to repeated instances of disgrace.

Nevertheless, amidst all these, the essential question remains unanswered: the rationale behind Senator Ningi’s suspension. It is imperative for the Senate to address these allegations and provide clarity to the public.
