Serena Williams has added the Berlin Tennis Open to the list of tournaments for her eagerly awaited comeback.

Already confirmed to make her return at the HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club in doubles alongside 16-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko, the 23-time Grand Slam winner will also play doubles in the Berlin tournament starting on June 15, with her partner still unknown.

Williams, 44, last competed on court at the US Open in 2022, in a match that has been billed as her emotional departure from tennis. It has been expected that she would return for some time after she entered back onto the anti-doping program (required to return to professional tennis).

The former World No 1 said she was thrilled to be getting back on the grass courts, and called each tournament on her comeback schedule significant as she continues to gather momentum.

The American could even play singles in Grand Slam matches once more, including Wimbledon, according to former world No.1 Lindsay Davenport.

The women’s record is held by Margaret Court, with 24 Grand Slam singles titles, so Williams needs one more trophy, and questions remain whether this will come from singles or from doubles events.
