Singapore’s bomb disposal experts successfully neutralized a 100kg World War Two aerial bomb on Tuesday, with the police confirming the operation’s success after evacuating over 4,000 residents from the vicinity.
A video released by the Singapore Army captured the detonation of the bomb at a construction site, accompanied by a resounding explosion. This bomb is believed to be one of the largest wartime explosives ever discovered in the Southeast Asian city-state.
Due to safety concerns, the war relic, unearthed just last week, could not be moved and had to be disposed of on-site by the military, according to the police.
Following the controlled detonation, authorities verified that buildings and roads remained structurally sound, allowing residents to return to their homes safely.
Singaporean authorities did not disclose the bomb’s origin.
Notably, another 100kg World War Two bomb was discovered and safely disposed of in 2016, although there were no reports of civilian evacuations at that time, as reported by local newspaper The Straits Times.
During World War Two, Singapore was under Japanese occupation from 1942 to 1945.
