Famous street singer, Habeeb Okikiola, who is popularly known as Portable, has been apprehended by the police for allegedly refusing to pay the balance of a G-Wagon vehicle he bought from a car dealer.
The singer was apprehended on Tuesday in Abule Egba, Lagos State according to Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesman in the state.
The ‘Zazoo Zeh’ singer had reportedly purchased the vehicle priced at ₦27 million but had only paid the sum of ₦13 million so far.
In a video now gone viral, Portable was seen scaling a gate after policemen approached him with an arrest warrant to follow them.
Another viral video, had however, displayed him being dragged, handcuffed and wheelbarrowed by about four policemen into a waiting vehicle.
In the melee that ensued, the voice of a lady, who portrayed herself as the car dealer, was heard in the background, voicing out expletives and narrating how Portable threatened her when she demanded that he settle the debt.
Meanwhile, a police spokesman (Hundeyin) had said that the police expect the singer’s legal practitioner to show up on Wednesday morning. He also said the singer might be taken to court, depending on the discussions with his lawyers.
Why It Matters
This news about Portable getting arrested for not paying the full amount for a G-Wagon he bought is a big deal.
It shows how important it is to pay what you owe, as when due, irregardless of his celebrity status as a case of payment default has now escalated into a legal dispute.
The videos of him trying to evade arrest and being taken away by the police have caught a lot of attention. It is now up to his lawyer to try and sort this messy issue out, even though there’s the likelihood that he might go to jail over this.
Bottom Line
Portable’s arrest highlights the consequences of failing to meet contractual agreements and also the need for responsible financial behavior in personal and professional transactions.
