The top seed Jannik Sinner catapulted into the last 16 of the Wimbledon tournament with a dominating 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Spain’s Pedro Martinez on Saturday, thus continuing his terrific run.
World No. 1 only spent 110 minutes to defeat a struggling Martinez who was clearly having difficulty with his shoulder injury throughout the game. Spotted’s pain did not stop Martinez from going on and he got warm support from the Centre Court crowd who cheered him at every move. Without being fazed, Sinner kept the high intensity of his game to notch his third consecutive win in straight sets.
So far, Sinner has conceded only 17 games in his first three matches—thereby equaling Jan Kodes’ record of 1972 Wimbledon for the fewest games lost in the professional era during the first three rounds. The Italian has not lost a single service game in the championship so far and is continuing his campaign which aims to land him the title of the first ever Italian Wimbledon winner.
The 23-year-old gave credit to his opponent’s performance by saying, “He was suffering from his shoulder and when you are not serving well on grass, it gets really hard. Respect to him.”
Sinner’s next is a fourth-round encounter with Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov, which will be a very challenging match.
