The Reykjanes peninsula in southwest Iceland near the capital city of Reykjavik has experienced a volcanic eruption, according to the country’s Meteorological Office (IMO) on Monday. The eruption follows a period of intense earthquake activity in the region. Matthew Jones from the service and research division at the IMO stated that at the moment it’s a very small eruption
Just a week ago, mbl.is was the first to report a noticeable uplift in various locations on the peninsula. The following day, on July 4th, a series of earthquakes shook the area. Since then, the number of tremors has increased significantly, with thousands of quakes occurring, many surpassing a magnitude of 4 on the Richter scale, and a few even reaching a magnitude of 5. Fortunately, there have been no reports of significant damage to structures so far.
