Dense fog and bad air quality levels have caused travel chaos in India’s capital Delhi.
As at the early hours of Friday, visibility in several areas was reported to be zero disrupting all transportation including flights, trains and road transport.
Over 150 flights have so far been been delayed, with dozens of trains reportedly running behind schedule due to bad weather conditions.
This has been a recurring problem in northern India every winter, where the low temperatures between December and January trap pollutants close to the ground affecting visibility and making travel difficult and the air hazardous.
According to the state-run, Safar website, the air quality index in Delhi was above 400 in several areas (more than 25 times the safe limit set by the World Health Organization).
Authorities in the capital have due to this, brought back pollution control measures, which include a ban on construction and demolition activities, and school classes going online.
The Delhi airport has already issued an advisory warning passengers of possible disruptions due to low visibility.
A flight tracking website flightradar24 revealed that departures at Delhi airport were delayed by more than 30 minutes and arrivals by almost 20 minutes.
Disgruntled passengers took to social media to lament the levels of chaos at the airport.
Meanwhile, India’s weather department has predicted light showers over the weekend and this expected to improve visibility conditions.
