Tottenham Hotspur skipper Son Heung-min has put beyond doubt that he will no longer be at the club after the current season, thus signing off from a magnificent 10-year run in north London.
The 33-year-old South Korean, who came from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, has been on the field for Spurs more than 450 times and scored 173 goals.
During a press conference in Seoul before Tottenham’s pre-season match against Newcastle, Son disclosed his decision by stating, “The summer is the time I have chosen to leave the club.
It was indeed the toughest decision I have made in my whole career.”Son raised the Europa League trophy in May —Spurs’ first ever European title in 41 years — but he was plagued by an injury throughout the season.
Talking about his decision to leave, he said, “Achieving a title in Europe was like a dream coming true to me. Now I am looking for a new environment where I can challenge myself further.”Although Son was reported to be going to Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States, he hasn’t given any indication of where he will be next.
Tottenham’s new head coach Thomas Frank acknowledged the contributions to the club of the departing legend, referring to him as “a true Spurs legend” and “one of the greatest players to play in the Premier League.”When Spurs take the pitch in the land of the dragon on Sunday, they are sure to have a full house to give Son a hero’s send-off.
