The South African and Chinese governments had on Wednesday, August 23, signed deals encompassing emissions technology, electricity transmission and distribution, and nuclear power during the BRICS summit.
The agreements is a part of the South African government’s efforts to put an end to the record power cuts that are a principle constraint on the economic growth of the country.
Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Electricity Minister had remarked that one of the agreement in the deal would see Chinese companies begin sharing technology to help South Africa’s struggling state utility Eskom, stop emissions from its coal-fired power plants.
The other agreements would see Chinese firms help Eskom improve its electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure, as well as share knowledge on nuclear power.
The BRICS group of emerging economies summit- consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – will hold from Tuesday, August 22 to Thursday, August 24 in Johannesburg, South Africa’s biggest city and commercial capital.
The BRICS members are expecting to use the summit to foster the grouping into a counterweight Western group of global institutions.
