Spanish authorities apprehended a national believed to be involved in the attempted murder of Alejo Vidal-Quadras, former leader of Spain’s conservative People’s Party in Catalonia. The arrest followed days of police surveillance, with investigators examining potential connections to foreign entities, as reported by El Confidencial.
The incident occurred on November 9 when Vidal-Quadras was shot in the face on a sidewalk in Madrid’s Salamanca neighborhood by a helmeted gunman who escaped on a motorbike. Despite the severity of the attack, the 78-year-old politician survived, with the bullet passing through his jaw. He is currently hospitalized.
The case is under the jurisdiction of an anti-terrorism court, though the spokesperson was unavailable for immediate comment. Vidal-Quadras, a former head of the People’s Party in Catalonia and a founder of Spain’s far-right Vox party, served as European Parliament vice-president from 2009 to 2014. Notably, he has been a strong supporter of the Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, which attributes the attack to the Iranian regime.
