Hungary striker Barnabas Varga departed the hospital on Wednesday following surgery for multiple facial fractures sustained in a severe collision during their 1-0 victory over Scotland at Euro 2024.

According to the Hungarian Football Federation, “Barnabas Varga was discharged from Stuttgart hospital this morning and is currently recuperating at his residence in Hungary,” as posted on X, previously known as Twitter.

The 29-year-old Ferencvaros player was involved in an aerial collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn while contesting a cross.

Upon recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Hungary’s team members swiftly indicated distress, with captain Dominik Szoboszlai assisting in bringing out the stretcher as teammates gathered around their injured colleague.

As Varga received medical attention, teammates held up sheets to shield him before he was taken off the field.

Kevin Csoboth scored the winning goal in the 100th minute, keeping Hungary’s hopes alive to qualify for the round of 16 as one of the best third-placed teams, pending the results of Wednesday’s matches.

Following the game, Varga’s teammates displayed his jersey while posing for a group photograph.
