Major hospital in Darfur region shut down after violence, raising concerns about access to healthcare amidst ongoing conflict.

Sudan’s already precarious situation worsened over the weekend as the main hospital in al-Fashir, North Darfur, was forced to close its doors following an attack. This leaves the city of over 1.8 million people, including displaced individuals, with limited access to critical medical care.

Who Was Attacked and Why?

Details surrounding the attack remain unclear. Medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF), which supports the facility, confirmed the closure but did not identify the perpetrators. Local volunteers, however, point the finger at the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The RSF has been locked in a power struggle with the Sudanese army since April 2023. The conflict has escalated in recent weeks, with al-Fashir emerging as a new battleground. This fighting has already displaced some 130,000 residents, and the hospital closure adds another layer of hardship.

Dire Situation for Civilians

The attack on the hospital is particularly concerning given the ongoing violence. MSF reports that over 1,300 wounded arrived at the facility between May 10th and June 6th, with over 200 fatalities. Many more are likely unable to reach the hospital due to the fighting.

Limited Options and Heightened Danger

Residents attempting to flee al-Fashir face additional dangers. The main road out of the city, controlled by the RSF, has been the site of attacks and killings, according to locals. This leaves people with limited escape routes, often forcing them towards areas controlled by armed opposition groups.

International Community Urged to Take Action

The deteriorating situation in Sudan demands immediate attention from the international community. The potential for famine looms large, and the attack on a vital medical facility further jeopardizes the well-being of innocent civilians. Urgent steps are needed to de-escalate the conflict and ensure access to critical humanitarian aid.
