Nigerian superstar Tems shined at the just concluded BET Awards which were held at Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles in the wee hours of Monday, June 27, 2022 (W.A.T). She beat fellow Nigerian artiste, Firebox DML, and other fellow nominees which include Dave from UK, Dinos (France), Fally Pupa (DR Congo), Little Simz (UK), and Major League DJZ (South Africa) to win her first major award of her career, Best International Act.
Shortly at the event, just before clinching the Best International Act for 2022, Tems had won Best Collaboration with Wizkid’s ‘Essence’ which featured Justin Bieber. The BET Awards is very well known for celebrating Black excellence in music, culture, and sports. For the Best Collaboration award, Tems and Wizkid’s Essence was up against music heavyweights in the U.S such as DJ Khaled ft Lil baby and Lil Durk’s ‘Every Change I Get’; Baby Seem ft Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Family Ties’; Bia ft Nicki Minaj’s ‘Whole Lotta’; Drake ft Future and Young Thug’s ‘Way 2 Sexy’, and Doja Cat ft SZA with their song, ‘Kiss me More’.
Nigeria’s afrobeat stars duly represented the nation when Pheelz and Fireboy DML respectively, gave upstanding performances at the event. However, Tems has not been the first Nigerian to win the Best International Act award, several Nigerian stars have in the past, held the title. They are 2Baba, D’banj, Ice Prince, Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy who won the award for the third consecutive time in 2021.
