At least five people have been confirmed dead from an attack on Sunday, June 25 in Lamu County, Kenya.
It was said that armed assailants had attacked two villages in Lamu county, southeast Kenya, burning houses and destroying valuable property.
Police officials have tagged the incident as a terrorist attack, a phrase they’ve commonly used to refer to raids by Somalia’s Islamist al Shabaab group.
Lamu is close to Kenya’s border with Somalia and fighters from al Shabaab group constantly attack the area in an effort to force Kenya to extract its troops (a peacekeeping committee defending the central government) from Somalia.
The assailants had invaded the villages of Salama and Juhudi, early on Sunday morning.
Four out of the five deceased had been killed by their throats being cut up, while the fifth victim had been shot.
The assailants had then razed their victims houses before fleeing the scene, according to police reports.
The Islamic group, al Qaeda-allied al Shabaab have been combating for years in Somalia, with hopes to topple the central government and institute its own rule based on its strict interpretation of the Islamic sharia law.
As at the time of filing this report, it is not clear if authorities have launched a pursuit, to find the assailants.
Time is of the essence in situations like these, if there is to be hope in finding these bandits. The Kenyan government should have by now, sent out security personnel to track down and capitally punish these terrorists, to serve as a reminder to future attackers.
