On Sunday, March 29, 2026, President Bola Tinubu asked Nigerians for a “low-key” celebration, citing the “national mood” and the “glimmer of light” at the end of his economic reform tunnel. While the President was busy donating his salary to wounded soldiers and their families, the internet was busy with a different kind of charity, digging up the past.
The controversy centers on a 1993 newspaper article, a tribute wishing then-Senator Bola Tinubu a happy 52nd birthday. For those who aren’t math wizards, the calculation is simple. If a man is 52 years old in 1993, he would be 85 years old today in 2026. Yet, the official birthday cakes in Aso Rock on Sunday were decorated for a man of 74.
This is a mathematical miracle that has “dragged” everyone from the First Lady to the Vice President into a web of age-defying storytelling.

The “Renewed Hope” or “Renewed Age”?
While Vice President Kashim Shettima and others were busy pouring out tributes to the “father of modern democracy,” opposition parties like the African Democratic Congress (ADC) took a much sharper tone. In a statement that felt more like a roast than a greeting, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi reminded the President that while his age might be flexible, the price of fuel, up nearly 500% is very rigid.
“Under your watch,” Abdullahi said, “basic transportation has turned into a daily calculation of survival.” Perhaps that’s where the President learned his math?
The Sycophants and the Silence
The President’s inner circle has been working overtime to keep the narrative focused on his “sacrifices.” First Lady Oluremi Tinubu spoke of his “kind and loving” nature, while Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Obasa claimed the “Renewed Hope” agenda is steering Nigeria toward prosperity. But none of these tributes addressed the elephant in the room: how does a man go from 52 in 1993 to 74 in 2026?
Even Britannica and Wikipedia have settled on the 1952 birth year, but they often include the fine print: “his age has not been verified.” It seems the only thing being verified is the frustration of Nigerians who are tired of a government that asks them to “endure” while the leadership’s own records don’t even add up.
A Presidency Built on Discrepancies
The age controversy is a perfect metaphor for the current administration. Whether it’s the “glimmer of light” at the end of a tunnel that seems to be getting longer, or a birthday that moves backward in time, there is a fundamental disconnect between the “State House truth” and the “Street truth.”
If the President can’t be clear about his own journey on this earth, how can Nigerians trust anything coming out of him or his cabinet?
