The Football Association has confirmed German manager Thomas Tuchel as the new manager of the Three Lions. Thomas Tuchel, 51-year-old, signs an 18-month contract that starts on January 1, 2025, and will take him through to the 2026 World Cup.
Tuchel is the third foreign coach to take over the reins in England after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello. The former Chelsea, PSG, and Bayern Munich boss seemed proud of taking the job as he termed it a “huge privilege” and an “exciting opportunity” in working with England’s talented squad.
FA CEO Mark Bullingham lauded Tuchel as one of the most outstanding coaches in the world and underlined how robust the recruitment process was. He will be assisted by Englishman Anthony Barry, an internationally experienced coach who has worked for several countries.
The 50-year-old German takes over from Gareth Southgate, who departed in July after leading England to two successive European Championship finals. Interim coach Lee Carsley will take charge for the final few months of the Nations League fixtures before Tuchel assumes duties.
With an illustrious club managerial record, which includes a Champions League triumph with Chelsea, it almost goes without saying what is expected: to deliver England their first major tournament triumph since 1966.
