The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the death of security guard Ebube Igboke, who was allegedly beaten to death by his colleagues at the Permanent Site of Ebonyi State University.
Igboke, originally from Ezzama in Ezza South Local Government Area, was part of a security team hired by the university for security services.
SP Joshua Ukandu, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed to PUNCH Metro on Wednesday that three individuals had been arrested in connection with the incident.
“They claimed to have caught someone stealing at EBSU’s Permanent Site and decided to take matters into their own hands. The victim was beaten and later taken to the police station, but officers directed them to rush him to the hospital. Unfortunately, he was confirmed dead upon arrival,” Ukandu said.
In response to the incident, the deceased’s family has submitted a petition to the Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Adaku Uche-Anya, seeking justice.
The petition, signed by their lawyer, D. I. Njoku, claimed that Igboke was violently attacked, and his lifeless body was later taken to the state police headquarters by those responsible for his death.
They further alleged that his fiancée, Oluomachi, who is also employed by the security outfit, was stopped from taking him to the hospital after being informed of the attack.
The family has appealed to authorities to hold those behind Igboke’s death accountable.
