Tiger Woods, 49, the tournament’s host, will play in next week’s Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, his first official P.G.A. Tour event since the British Open last July. The event, which runs from the 13th to the 16th of February, draws a $20 million purse and supports Woods’ TGR Foundation.
Walking onto the green, it has been an incredibly moving day by the decision to play came after the announcement of Woods’ mother’s death at the age of 78. Woods had undergone lower back surgery in September and played in a 36-hole event with his son in December since his last official outing. He also played twice last month in his indoor team golf league.
The Genesis Invitational was Woods’ first event of 2024 on the PGA Tour. This year, however, the tournament was moved to Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego because of wildfires in Los Angeles. Woods admitted last December that he still was not “tournament sharp.”
