Bola Tinubu, the incoming president, arrived in Abuja on Monday after several weeks away. After exhausting campaigns, his aides alleged, he went on vacation.
His arrival occurs before the handover date of May 29, when he is anticipated to be sworn in as Nigeria’s new president for the following four years.
His campaign spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, had earlier in the day proclaimed Mr. Tinubu’s impending return.
Mr. Tinubu, who had unexpectedly left the country in March, touched in at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at 4:30 on Monday.
His sudden departure from the country prompted questions and raised eyebrows in public places, leading some to speculate that he may have left clandestinely for health reasons.
It wasn’t until doubts about Mr. Tinubu’s travels began to surface that his media team issued a statement claiming that the politician had traveled to Paris, France, and the United Kingdom to relax and prepare for his inauguration.
Together with his wife, Senator Oluremi, Mr. Tinubu traveled back to the nation. They were welcomed by Kashim Shettima, the vice president-elect, other senior APC officials, and cheering fans.
