Participation in the AU Coordination Meeting

A statement released on Friday by presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale outlines that Tinubu will engage in the meeting alongside representatives from the Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Regional Mechanisms (RMs), and AU member states. This gathering serves as the primary forum for aligning the efforts of the AU and the RECs, focusing on the implementation of the continental integration agenda.

Role as ECOWAS Chairman

In his capacity as the Chairman of the ECOWAS authority of heads of state and government, Tinubu will deliver an address on regional integration progress. He will review the achievements and challenges faced in West Africa since the last coordination meeting held in Nairobi, Kenya, in July 2023.

Presentation of the 2024 Report

A key highlight of the meeting will be President Tinubu’s presentation of the ‘2024 Report on the State of the Community.’ This report will cover key areas such as peace, regional security, governance, economic integration, humanitarian and social development, energy, mines, and agriculture. The Mid-Year Coordination Meeting initiated in 2017, aims to synchronize the efforts of the AU and the RECs. This meeting replaces the former June/July summits and is instrumental in advancing the AU’s integration agenda.

The Accra meeting will include discussions on enhancing the AU’s early warning and conflict prevention mechanisms. Additionally, it will promote cooperation among regional economic communities to fast-track integration. The theme for the AU in 2024, “Educate and Skill Africa for the 21st Century,” will underpin the discussions and objectives of the meeting. Following the conclusion of the meeting, President Tinubu, accompanied by senior government officials, will return to Nigeria.

Bottom Line

President Tinubu’s participation in the AU’s mid-year coordination meeting underscores Nigeria’s commitment to regional integration and cooperation. His leadership role in ECOWAS positions him as a key figure in addressing the continent’s challenges and driving progress across various sectors.
