Controversial Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has urged the Igbo people to preserve their ancestral traditions by ensuring that traditional rulers are selected through spiritual and cultural processes rather than political or governmental influence.
In a post shared via Instagram, Yul called on Ndi Igbo to reject modern practices that undermine the sacredness of traditional leadership, warning that the shift away from indigenous customs is contributing to moral decay and rising crime rates in communities.
“Ndi Igbo, stop messing up our tradition. A traditional ruler must be selected traditionally, not by election or the government. And he must be a core traditionalist. Those are the ways of our forefathers,” he wrote.
The actor stressed that traditional rulers should be individuals chosen by the deity of the land, not through democratic processes, noting that such spiritual selection comes with sacred responsibility and accountability.
“A traditional ruler must be selected by the deity of the land. Then he will swear before the deity to uphold truth, unity and peace, and shun evil. Any day he goes against the oath, the deity will strike him down. With that, he will never support evil, and he’ll fight evil with all his might,” he added.
Yul expressed concern over the erosion of cultural values among Ndi Igbo, attributing it to excessive adoption of foreign ideologies.
“We have now embraced too many of the white man’s ways and destroyed our society with it. That’s why there’s so much crime in our communities today. It’s time to retrace our steps and bring back our glory,” he said.
His message has since sparked discussions online, with many applauding his stance on the protection of cultural identity and traditional institutions.
