Tragedy on Kogi Waters: 24 Rescued, Several Still Missing

The Kogi State government has confirmed a devastating boat accident that occurred recently, leading to the loss of many lives. In a statement on Saturday, the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, provided updates on the incident and the government’s response.

Details of the Incident

The tragic accident happened as a boat carrying passengers from Kupa Ebe to Katcha Market capsized near Kpata Danbo. While 14 people were initially rescued, ongoing efforts have brought the total number of survivors to 24, with many receiving medical attention in nearby health facilities. Unfortunately, several passengers remain unaccounted for, and many are feared dead.

Government’s Response

Condolences and Support

The Kogi State Government expressed its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. “Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time,” Fanwo said. The government assured the public of its commitment to supporting rescue efforts and minimizing further casualties.

Emergency Relief and Medical Assistance

Governor Ahmed Ododo has directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide immediate relief materials to the affected families.

Additionally, the Ministry of Health has been tasked with ensuring survivors receive adequate medical care. Also, the Kogi State Government emphasized the need for enhanced safety protocols in water transportation. He enjoined all personnels concerned to avoid night voyages, Strictly adhere to safety protocols by operators and The development of legal and administrative frameworks to ensure the safety of passengers and operators. While calling on Marine Marshals and rescue agencies to intensify efforts to save more lives.

Conclusion

The government reiterated its commitment to preventing future tragedies and supporting affected families. “May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may their families find the strength to bear this loss,” the statement concluded.
