Investigations by Nigeria’s Accident Investigation Bureau revealed critical details about the crash. The pilot’s decision-making during adverse weather conditions and inadequate runway visibility due to heavy rain emerged as contributing factors. The aircraft, descending toward the airport amidst wind shear, faced challenges in locating the runway due to switched-off lights intended to conserve fuel.

Insights from Investigations

The tragedy’s investigation uncovered distressing details. As the ill-fated plane approached the Port Harcourt Airport, the runway lights remained off due to fuel-saving measures, compounded by heavy rainfall obscuring visibility. The pilots, unable to locate the runway and faced with adverse weather, struggled to maneuver the aircraft, leading to the fatal crash that left only two survivors.

The investigation further highlighted crucial lapses in operational procedures, emphasizing the need for enhanced safety measures to prevent such catastrophic aviation incidents in the future.
