President Donald Trump is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, with the goal of securing a halt in the Ukraine war. The talks come as part of diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and open the door for further negotiations. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio explained that while the immediate aim is to stop the fighting, reaching a full settlement will require more time and deeper discussions.
Secretary of State Outlines Peace Requirements
Speaking at the State Department on Thursday, Rubio said, “To achieve a peace, I think we all recognize that there’ll have to be some conversation about security guarantees. There’ll have to be some conversation about … territorial disputes and claims, and what they’re fighting over.” He stressed that these complex issues would form part of a larger agreement, but the first priority in the Trump-Putin talks is halting the violence.
Goal of Temporary Peace Before Full Agreement
Rubio noted that President Trump’s immediate hope from the Trump-Putin talks is to achieve a temporary stoppage of fighting. “All these things will be part of a comprehensive thing. But I think the President’s hope is to achieve some stoppage of fighting so that those conversations can happen,” he said. This suggests that the U.S. is looking for an initial breakthrough that could pave the way for a broader peace deal.
Trump-Putin Talks Seek Halt in Ukraine War
The Trump-Putin talks on Friday are expected to focus on ending the bloodshed and laying the groundwork for more extensive negotiations. While a complete resolution may take longer, both sides appear ready to explore steps that could stop the fighting and create the conditions for lasting peace in Ukraine.
