Trump’s Revenge: DOJ Launches Criminal Perjury Probe Into Accuser E. Jean Carroll

The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has officially launched a federal criminal investigation into author and columnist E. Jean Carroll. This major probe explores whether she committed perjury while testifying under oath during her high-profile civil lawsuits against President Donald Trump.

The investigation represents a massive escalation in the ongoing legal feud between the president and his longtime accuser. Critics are already viewing the move as a highly calculated act of political retribution orchestrated by the current administration.

How an Outside Funding Dispute Sparked a Federal Case

The criminal case centers around a specific statement Carroll made during a videotaped deposition taken in 2022 by Trump’s defense attorney, Alina Habba.
During that deposition, Habba directly asked Carroll if any third-party organizations or donors were financing her legal team. Carroll stated under oath that she was covering her own expenses and had received absolutely no outside financial help.

However, just two weeks before her civil trial was scheduled to begin, Carroll’s legal team filed an update with the federal judge. They revealed that a progressive non-profit group funded by American billionaire and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman had been paying a substantial portion of Carroll’s legal fees and court expenses.

Hoffman is a prominent mega-donor who has spent millions of dollars backing Democratic candidates and anti-Trump political action committees. Trump’s defense team immediately accused Carroll of intentionally hiding this relationship for months to make herself look like an independent victim rather than a well-funded political operative. Federal prosecutors are now evaluating whether that initial denial constitutes a deliberate, criminal attempt to mislead the court.

The Context of Carroll’s Multi-Million Dollar Civil Verdicts

This federal perjury probe comes at a time when Trump is fighting to overturn massive financial penalties resulting from Carroll’s initial lawsuits. In 2019, Carroll publicly alleged that Trump had cornered and sexually assaulted her inside a Manhattan department store dressing room during the mid-1990s. Trump fiercely denied the allegations, calling them a fabricated “made-up scam” and declaring that Carroll was “not my type.”

Because the statute of limitations for criminal assault had long expired, Carroll pursued civil litigation:

The 2023 Verdict: A federal jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation, ordering him to pay Carroll $5 million in damages.

The 2024 Verdict: A separate federal jury slammed Trump with a massive $83.3 million defamation judgment after he continued to mock and attack Carroll on social media from the White House briefing room.

Trump has actively appealed both verdicts. Earlier this month, a federal appeals court granted the president a temporary reprieve, allowing him to stall paying the $83.3 million judgment while his legal team petitions the U.S. Supreme Court to throw out the civil rulings entirely.

DOJ Conflicts of Interest

The structural mechanics of this investigation are drawing intense scrutiny. The criminal probe is being run directly out of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago rather than Washington, D.C., or New York. Officials chose the Chicago office because the non-profit organization linked to Reid Hoffman’s legal funding is legally headquartered in Illinois.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has officially recused himself from any involvement in the case. Blanche took over leadership of the Justice Department in April after Trump dismissed former Attorney General Pam Bondi. Crucially, before being appointed to lead the DOJ, Blanche served as Trump’s personal defense attorney and helped craft the appeals against Carroll’s civil verdicts.

Despite Blanche’s official recusal, congressional Democrats and former federal prosecutors are sounding alarms. This inquiry follows a series of recent DOJ actions aimed at the president’s political rivals, including a federal indictment secured last month against former FBI Director James Comey. Critics argue that the White House is systemically dismantling the historical independence of the Justice Department, transforming federal law enforcement into a weapon for personal and political vengeance.

A Blatant Abuse of Federal Power Meant to Intimidate Victims

This criminal perjury investigation is a terrifying, textbook example of an authoritarian administration weaponizing the highest levels of federal law enforcement to execute a personal vendetta. E. Jean Carroll sat in front of two separate, independent American juries. Both panels looked at the evidence, listened to the arguments, and found Donald Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation. Instead of respecting the rule of law, the executive branch is now using the FBI and federal prosecutors to bully an 82-year-old woman because she had the audacity to win a legal battle against the president.

The actual legal basis for this perjury probe is laughably thin and completely absurd. When Carroll was asked in a deposition if she had outside funding, her lawyers quickly corrected the record and informed both the judge and Trump’s defense team well before the trial ever started. In fact, a federal appeals court panel already looked at this exact funding dispute in 2024 and completely dismissed the idea that Carroll had committed any kind of fraud or perjury. For the DOJ to drag this dead issue back into a criminal courtroom in Chicago, just weeks after Trump appointed his own former personal defense lawyer to run the department, is an absolute mockery of our judicial system.

This isn’t about upholding the integrity of oaths; it is about sending a chilling message to every single citizen in the country. The White House is signaling that if you stand up to this administration, expose their wrongdoing, or win a civil judgment against the president, they will find a procedural footnote, label it a felony, and use the full power of the state to ruin your life. By turning the Department of Justice into a private defense firm for the president’s personal grievances, the current administration is eroding the foundational boundaries of American democracy.
