Following her most recent conviction earlier this week, a UK judge on Friday handed child serial murderer Lucy Letby another whole-life order for the attempted murder of a baby girl.
Judge James Goss jailed the 34-year-old letby at Manchester Crown Court in northwest England, calling her crime “another shocking act of calculated, callous cruelty.”
Letby was found guilty by a jury in the same court on Tuesday of trying to kill an infant girl while she was employed in the neonatal intensive care unit almost ten years ago.
It comes nearly a year after a different jury convicted the former nurse of murdering seven newborn babies and attempted to kill six more, making her Britain’s most prolific child serial murderer in recent times.
She is already serving a life sentence for these offences and was denied an appeal earlier this year.
“During the course of this trial, you have coldly denied any responsibility for any offences and sought to attribute wrongdoing to others,” Goss said in his sentencing remarks Friday. “You have no remorse.”
As she was carried away from the dock, Letby said, “I’m innocent.”
In 2016, she faced a retrial for the attempted murder of a baby girl, known in court as Child K, at the Countess of Chester Hospital in northwest England. Jurors in her original trial last year failed to reach a verdict on that accusation.
In Essence
Lucy Letby’s second life sentence for the attempted murder of a baby girl further highlights the severity of her actions. Her case has been deeply disturbing, given the vulnerability of her victims and the breach of trust inherent in her role as a neonatal nurse.
Judge James Goss’s words also highlights the calculated and callous nature of her crimes, as well as her complete lack of remorse.
