The ongoing war in Ukraine, now extending over two years, remains a major concern for Europe. In an effort to speed up a resolution and ensure Ukraine’s peace, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba is set to visit three African countries this week. This tour aims to strengthen Ukraine’s position in the conflict with Russia and seeks to enlist support from Africa to join Europe’s stance on isolating Russia, a key supplier of energy and commodities.
Diplomatic Tour Details
Kuleba, who is on his fourth diplomatic mission to Africa in the past two years, will visit Malawi, Zambia, and Mauritius from August 4-8. According to a statement from the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, the focus of the meetings will be on enhancing bilateral relations based on mutual respect and shared interests. Key topics will include the involvement of African nations in global efforts to achieve a just peace for Ukraine and the world.
“All meetings will focus on the development of bilateral relations based on mutual respect and interests. Among the key topics will be the participation of African states in global efforts to restore a just peace for Ukraine and the world,”
Challenges and Objectives
During the recent peace summit in Switzerland, several African countries were present but showed reluctance to align with the Western stance against Russia. Kuleba’s tour will also address the supply of Ukrainian grain to the region and the potential for African companies to participate in Ukraine’s reconstruction.
Strategic Importance of Africa
The visit to Africa is quite strategic as Africa is one of the major consumers of imports and a large market for most Foreign countries, not only that the continent is also endowed with rich Human and mineral resources that could help any nation thrive. Ukraine’s aim to isolate Russia if successful will be a big blow to Russia’s economy and could also facilitate a speedy resolution when economic might is subdued.
