The United Nations Security Council has requested an immediate ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas in Gaza as well as the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages as the United States eschewed from voting.
The remaining 14 council members then voted for the resolution on Monday.
The U.S ambassador to the U.N, Linda Thomas-Greenfield who spoke after the vote had blamed Hamas for delaying in passing a ceasefire resolution.
Thomas-Greenfield had said that the reason why the US abstained was because they had not agreed with everything in the resolution.
“Certain key edits were snubbed, including our request to add a castigation of Hamas.” Thomas-Greenfield had said.
The U.N ambassador had also stressed that the release of captives will lead to an increase in humanitarian aid in the besieged coastal enclave.
It’s appalling to witness the United States abstaining from voting on a resolution aimed at halting the violence between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
The urgency for a ceasefire and the release of hostages cannot be overstated, and yet, the U.S. ambassador’s remarks seem to prioritize political agendas over human lives.
Blaming Hamas for the delay in passing the resolution while failing to acknowledge the immediate need for action is both irresponsible and morally reprehensible. Let’s not even factor how disheartening it is to see diplomatic efforts hindered by political maneuvering, especially when millions of innocent lives are at stake.
The United States must prioritize humanitarian concerns over political posturing and take decisive action to help bring an end to the violence and suffering in Gaza.
