Following a significant assault by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas on Israel, the United Nations Security Council is scheduled to convene on Sunday, as confirmed by diplomats.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly denounced the Hamas attack and called for all diplomatic initiatives to prevent a broader conflict, as stated by U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.
“The Secretary-General expresses deep concern for the safety of civilian populations and emphasizes the imperative of upholding international humanitarian law to safeguard and respect civilians at all times,” Dujarric emphasized.
During this attack, Hamas launched its most extensive assault on Israel in years, resulting in the loss of over 40 lives and injuries to numerous individuals. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded by declaring his nation to be in a state of war.
This attack coincidentally occurred 50 years and one day after Egyptian and Syrian forces initiated an offensive during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur in an attempt to regain territory that Israel had seized during a brief conflict in 1967.
