United Airlines is introducing a redesigned seating option that removes the discomfort of the traditional middle seat on some of its aircraft.
The airline announced on July 14 that its new Airbus A321XLR fleet will feature a unique row in the Economy Plus cabin where the middle seat is replaced with a fixed shared table, creating extra personal space for passengers seated by the window and aisle.
United said it will become the first known US airline to introduce this type of cabin layout.
The built-in table will permanently occupy the space normally taken by the middle seat, giving two passengers additional room and a more comfortable travel experience on long-haul routes.
Explaining the innovation, the airline said the feature is designed to provide “extra space to stretch out on longer international flights.”
Andrew Nocella, United’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, said the airline is continuing to expand passenger choices across its fleet.
“We’re investing nose-to-tail across our fleet and giving customers choice and value in every cabin,” Nocella said.
“The XLR is our newest aircraft and not only offers all-aisle access lie-flat seats in United Polaris but now also includes seats in Economy Plus with extra leg and elbow room. Our customers are going to love all these new options.”
The new seating arrangement is expected to go on sale later this year, although United has yet to announce ticket prices.
According to the airline, the first A321XLR aircraft will begin operating on domestic routes this autumn, with international services expected to follow in early 2027. More than half of the planned fleet of 50 aircraft is expected to be in service by 2028.
Some of the planes will replace the airline’s Boeing 757 on existing international routes, while others will be used to launch new services across Europe and South America.
The Economy Plus cabin on the new aircraft already offers passengers three extra inches of legroom compared to standard Economy seating.
Earlier this year, United also announced another cabin innovation aimed at improving passenger comfort on long-distance journeys.
The feature, known as Relax Row, is expected to debut in 2027 on selected Boeing 787 and Boeing 777 aircraft. It will allow travellers to purchase an entire row of three Economy seats that can be converted into a couch using adjustable leg rests.
