Luigi Mangione, 26, has decided to drop his fight against extradition and face the long arm of the law in New York for the high-profile murder of healthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Mangione, who attended two back-to-back hearings in Pennsylvania on Thursday, is now on his way to New York. The first hearing dealt with a gun charge in Pennsylvania, while the second focused on his extradition to New York, where he faces a myriad of charges, including first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder—one of which is being labeled as an act of “terrorism.”
Outside the courthouse in Hollidaysburg, the atmosphere was charged. Protesters held signs demanding sweeping reforms to the US healthcare system, a surprising turn of events that users online have consistently debated about.
The Ivy League University graduate was nabbed at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, just five days after Thompson was gunned down on a Manhattan street near a Hilton hotel. But despite the seriousness of the charges, Mangione’s lawyer, Thomas Dickey, has maintained that there’s no solid evidence linking his client to the crime.
As Mangione prepares for his transfer to New York, the case continues to garner public attention. I, myself have been glued to the saga ever since the United Healthcare CEO’s death was reported.
