The Kingdom of Bahrain, a key U.S. Middle East ally, has sentenced 30 individuals for espionage and providing support to Iranian “terrorist acts”. These heavy sentences were handed down on as the region grapples with heightened tensions and direct military fallout from recent Iranian missile strikes.
The prosecution detailed the following rulings:
•Life Sentences: Five people were sentenced to life in prison on charges of spying for Iran.
•Espionage Sentences: 25 individuals received 10-year prison terms for their involvement in spying operations.
•Terrorist Support: A separate group of 25 people was each sentenced to 10 years for supporting Iranian-led “terrorist acts” within Bahrain.
Mass Citizenship Revocations
Beyond the prison sentences, the Bahraini interior ministry announced on Monday that it has stripped the citizenship of 69 individuals. Authorities accused those targeted of “glorifying” hostile actions taken by Iran and maintaining unauthorized ties to foreign entities.
This move follows a royal directive from King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to take decisive action against those who “betrayed the nation” or undermined national security. Most of those stripped of their nationality were naturalized citizens of non-Bahraini origin.
A Regional Security Crisis
Bahrain’s role as the host of the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet has placed it on the front lines of the current confrontation. Recent Iranian retaliatory attacks have seen missiles strike dangerously close to the U.S. base in the kingdom.
The government has linked this domestic crackdown to a wider effort to dismantle Iran-backed influence operations, which include:
•Intelligence gathering on sensitive sites by cells tied to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
•The spread of pro-Iran content and footage of Iranian strikes online.
•Communication with hostile foreign groups.
While Bahraini officials frame these measures as essential for national security, the move has drawn criticism from human rights groups, who warn of a “dangerous era of repression” implemented without proper legal safeguards.
