The Trump administration has launched an offensive in the global culture wars, issuing a bombshell decree that instructs U.S. embassies worldwide to classify diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies in allied nations as official “human rights abuses,” placing them in the same category as torture and political persecution.
The radical new rules, delivered to diplomats compiling the annual Human Rights Report, represent a wholesale weaponization of American foreign policy. The State Department now explicitly targets not only DEI programs but also government-subsidized abortion and the facilitation of mass migration, labeling them all as infringements on human rights, a move critics condemn as a “jaw-dropping” distortion of international law to serve a domestic partisan agenda.

A senior State Department official, speaking anonymously, justified the shift by stating rights are “given to us by God, our creator, not by governments.” Meanwhile, Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott declared “enough is enough,” vowing the administration would not let “racially discriminatory employment practices” and the “mutilation of children” — its term for gender-affirming care — “go unchecked.”
Why It Matters
By declaring diversity initiatives a “human rights abuse,” the Trump administration isn’t just criticizing DEI; it is systematically dismantling a decades-old, bipartisan framework for global moral accountability and rebuilding it as a cudgel to bash its domestic political enemies on a world stage.
The move is a political masterstroke that serves two purposes: it fires up the base by internationalizing the war on “wokeness,” and it provides a pretext to excuse authoritarian allies by creating a false moral equivalence between their abuses and another nation’s social policies. The annual Human Rights Report, once a gold standard of objective analysis, has been officially transformed into a propaganda tool for the American culture war, signalling that under this administration, American values are no longer universal—they are exclusively partisan.
